I never thought that I will be making condensed milk at home. I have this impression that it is very complicated to make and there is no way that we can do it from our own kitchen. Well, I was wrong! 🙂
I did some research online and found it that it is very easy to make. The only catch is that it is a little bit time consuming and you have to closely monitor at some point.
Thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Šimenc for the fresh milk – from their farm. Aside from the milk, they have shared also their potatoes and spinach.
- 1 liter fresh cows milk
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 jars of approximately 250 grams each
- Using a medium-sized and heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the milk and sugar. Mix thoroughly.
- Heat the milk and sugar mixture under low heat. Make sure that the sugar granules have fully dissolved.
- Stir a bit then bring to medium-low heat and allow to simmer for about 45-50 minutes. Set the timer only when the milk starts to simmer – little bubbles on the side of the pan. Do not stir after this point. There will be a formation of foam while the milk is simmering, simply remove it using a clean spoon.
- After the 45-50 minute mark and after skimming, you can now stir the mixture. Set the timer for another 20 minutes. Please take note that you might extend the cooking time depending the status of your milk mixture. If it has reduced to half and starts to thicken, then it is finished.
- When ready, remove from the heat and transfer the milk to a clean jar, don’t cover yet. Let the condensed milk cool completely first before putting the lid on. Store in the fridge and can last for about 6 months.
- Many Filipinos use condensed milk as bread spread especially with Pan de Sal. Ask your Pinoy neighbors and they will tell you even more condensed milk stories! 🙂

- VERY IMPORTANT TIP: Do Not Boil the milk mixture, only simmer.
- Please take note that cooking time me vary. Mine took 1.5 hours to make.
- Don’t be tempted to stir or mix the milk mixture during the simmering stage as this might result in crystallization. Only stir after the first 50 minute mark. Treat this as making caramel.
- Continue skimming if a thin film of milk still forms on top and please wash your spoon or dip in clean water. Watch also the side of the pan as there might also some formation, clean it as well.
- You can double this recipe or you may also cut in half if you are not comfortable yet in making larger batches. For making smaller or half batch, you may adjust the cooking time for 35-45 minutes first then extend if needed.
- Cook the mixture further and you will have Dulce de Leche
- A little bit more of cooking and you can make yema balls 🙂
